Jonathan -
Consulting Senior Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Being Consulting, this varies greatly, but typically at my grade I will lead functional and technical project teams, lead the design of large complex solutions, manage the relationship with client stakeholders, and help grow the team.

Typical day

Again varies greatly, might be shaping a proposal, leading design workshops with clients, managing a complex technical delivery, speaking at industry forums, helping build the team and skills. This can be using a range of tools, from PowerPoint, Excel, project management tools as well as technical development tools.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Varied work, access to senior stakeholders at a wide range of clients and major projects, global travel, high quality team members, being challenged and rewarded/recognition for performance.

Challenging aspects

Tricky clients, difficult challenges, managing global multi-discipline teams and rapidly learning new concepts/technologies.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Considered a career in financial services (trading etc), but 2008 crash and tedious nature of some of the work at HSBC put me off.

Always had an interest in technology, which is becoming more of a hot area generally, so decided to merge my finance and technical acumen to build a career in this area.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I use my degree to some indirect extent, various IT and project management skills, technical skills, communication skills (senior managers and customers at Management level), delegation and co-ordination skills. Some understanding of Insurance workings from degree modules.

Training I receive as part of my job

Studying for CIMA (probably 1st level only)
PRINCE2 project management
ITIL Foundation (IT service)
LLMIT (Lloyds of London Insurance Test)

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Ensure to get good work experience in between semesters, even if unpaid, as a degree is not enough to get a job.

Explore a variety of industries and ensure to do a lot of background reading and internet trawling so you can come across as if you really know your stuff and are interested in the domain.

Apply for as many roles as you can as only a subset will likely respond, include temp roles as if you impress they will keep you.

Travel if you can afford it, as you probably won't get around to it later when you have more commitments and a bit of time out won't hurt your chances of landing a job much.

Enjoy your time at university and participate in clubs / societies!
