Patrick -
Head of Education at Endeavour

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Developing and leading education provision predominantly for children missing from education. Providing a high degree of wrap around care to all our learners which includes designated safeguarding lead. In addition Line Management and direction of staff, budgeting, working collaboratively with stakeholders including the local authority.

Typical day

No day is the same!
It may involve home visits to meet new learners, delivery of engagement sessions, leading team building games, meeting volunteers, planning a fundraising event, organising staff training, taking part in a staff social event after work (for example caving or canoeing) and even helping maintain our building.

There are also frequent meetings with beneficiaries such as the local authority.

As we are a charity I am also involved in the day to day operation of the charity.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The variety. No two days are the same. I get involved in all aspects of the charity. I also work in a multi agency environment to help support our learners meeting excellent and passionate practitioners from social care, CAHMS, the local authority and other charities.

Challenging aspects

Juggling finance with what we want to do for the young people is always a huge challenge - hence a lot of effort on fundraising. Some of the adults involved with some beneficiaries lives can present real frustrating challenges! The current political and economic landscape adds to the mix of challenges.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Previously I was a teacher in a mainstream school. This was an opportunity to work with young people and communities who have been marginalised in a completely new environment. A new challenge!

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Patience, humour, conversation, negotiation, persuasion..... People skills / interpersonal skills are vital in this line of work. Face recognition skills are an advantage when out in the community! Basic budgeting.

I am a qualified teacher.

Training I receive as part of my job

Regular training updates plus association with a network of similar organisations.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Go for it!

You don't have to be a qualified teacher to work in the alternative sector for organisations like Endeavour. Working with young people can be very rewarding (as well as frustrating!). Different organisations and institutions can be very different - you may need to find an institution / establishment that suits you and not give up if the first place you experience is not you.

Consider doing some volunteering in the sector - we welcome volunteers at Endeavour.

Oh - and be patient.

Other comments

I am happy to take enquiries.
