Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I specialise in energy forecasting, in particular assessing renewable production (wind/solar/hydro) through the 1-14 day ahead period using a range of numerical weather models. Also produce longer range forecasts that highlight the most likely weather conditions across Europe a month or season ahead.
An early start, sometimes at 5am, ingesting the latest weather models (which update several times a day). Produce forecasts that include confidence and risk through the morning periods, sometimes having conference calls with traders, and often finish around early- to mid-afternoon.
The satisfaction of seeing a difficult forecast decision verify as correct makes the (occasional) stress worthwhile.
Making decisions when weather models are in disagreement and justifying the chosen forecast path.
Have always been interested in meteorology, with the UK of course having such a varied climate.
Data analysis, communication, high work efficiency
Went on to complete a Masters in meteorology & climatology at the University of Birmingham, and was then employed immediately at MeteoGroup where I have been since.
Would love to remain within the energy sector, with renewables being a key and vital source of power in the coming decades.
Don't worry about things that don't interest you and focus on what makes you tick.
