Ellen -
Business Analyst
About the job

Main responsibilities

When people ask for IT solutions to suit their particular needs I will interview them to understand a bit more about what their particular requirements are. I will take time to understand their current work flow and see how a digital solution can make their work easier / quicker / less labour intensive. It is then my responsibility to hand over to IT developers to ensure they have understood the ask and will review the solution to ensure it has maximum benefit to the end user.

Typical day

No two days are the same! I will be meeting with executive leads to understand strategic steers, often interviewing end users (in my case this is anyone who works for the NHS: GPs, paramedics, nurses etc). I will also usually meet with the developer for progress updates and translate this back to our team and end users.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I really enjoy meeting with lots of different people, understanding their world a bit better and then translating that to developers.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Business analysis appealed to me as it allows me to constantly be thinking up new ways that digital solutions can be created. Usually people I work with will be super engaged and keen to get things moving which creates a fun, dynamic and fast paced environment.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

3 days after my graduation I started consulting to the NHS in population health management which uses data to better understand the health concerns of a group of people. After a year consulting, I got my first permanent job as a project support in my current team. This is quite an admin-based job but allowed me creative freedom and gave me the chance to try my hand at many different types of work. After a year, I was able to secure a promotion to my current position.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I see myself developing and honing my skills as a business analyst. I have always liked the idea of keeping my skills wide and far reaching so would like to work in a variety of sectors.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Be more particular with the company / organisation / team you chose rather than the job title or money.
