Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Creating and project managing an annual fundraising event to raise both money and awareness for refugees. I manage the event across Australia and UK. It involves considerable international travel

Typical day

No day is the same. Mapping out supporter journeys, writing diverse communications, producing videos, maximising budget, coordinating stakeholders, collecting stories, collaboration, innovating strategy, managing call centre etc

What do I enjoy about my job?

Connecting communities and refugees. The freedom to try new ideas and to be creative. Disparate responsibilities

Challenging aspects

Telling a story that both engages viewers enough to take action, while aligning it with diverse refugee experience, which also empowers and upholds the dignity of all refugees

Creative thinking, critical thinking, project management, research, qual and quant analysis, stakeholder engagement etc


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

2014 - 2016 produced corporate conferences for different agencies and freelanced in Europe and Australia. Broken up with considerable international travel
2016 - 2017 MA in Conflict and Human Rights at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. Including field research in Haiti with UN
2018 - 2019 Marketing, comms, and fundraising for an Australian-based NGO

Where do I see myself in the future?

Moving departments into programmes, and then will spend time in the field either coordinating humanitarian aid or researching conflict. Would consider a PhD in conflict and peace studies.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Learn a new language - I chose French, but Arabic would be more valuable. Gain experience working with an NGO to make lots of contacts and deepen understanding
