Katherine -
Assurance Associate

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

As an assurance associate, I am tasked with visiting different clients around the country, mainly within London, to test their financial statements and help senior staff members give an audit opinion. Most clients are FTSE100/250 and well known which is very interesting. At the same time, I am qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with the ICAEW.

Typical day

A typical day involves various meetings within the team to update them on progress. Typically you are on a client for a few weeks and the deadline is dependent on the year end of their financial statements. You are given an area of responsibility such as revenue or expenses, and I will speak to the relevant managerial personnel to obtain materials to test their figures for example, invoices and bank statements. Often the calculations and checks are not easy, and you need to liaise with the client regularly to discuss any issues. The main aim is to ensure the figures are free from material misstatement.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I gained the graduate scheme whilst undertaking my undergrad, so upon graduation I went straight into work. I am half way through completing the ACA.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Once I have qualified, I would like to requalify in law, eventually becoming a barrister in tax or banking & finance.
