Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

To analyse, monitor and report financial performance of our central London developments - from prospective opportunities to on-going projects.

Typical day

- Analysing scheme performance through development appraisals;
- discussing market movements and letting negotiations with our agents and valuers;
- reviewing construction costs with the project managers and quantity surveyors;
- reporting financial performance to the development managers, executive boards and any joint venture partners.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Influencing the design of a scheme and development strategy

Challenging aspects

Detailed financial analysis using complicated spread-sheets and predicting market movements (development can be a risky business).

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Property is a tangible and physical asset and development gives you an opportunity to influence your physical environment.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

- RICS accredited degree and qualification as chartered surveyor (MRICS);
- Valuation and development appraisal knowledge and experience;
- Market knowledge;
- Excel skills.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

- Finished undergraduate degree in 2010 (Geography);
- completed masters degree in 2011 (Commercial Property);
- completed internships at Savills, JLL and TFT;
- got a permanent job with Colliers International in May 2012 where I worked for 5 years in the Development Advisory team;
- qualified as a chartered surveyor in May 2015;
- moved to British Land in May 2017.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'd love to work as a Development Manager at British Land so I have more responsibility and influence on the development process.

My piece of advice to students

Property is a very interesting industry with very diverse roles to suit people with a variety of skills and interests so consider where you might fit in.
Get qualified.
Contacts are key.

Other comments

Property internships are great, but any job makes you more employable as skills gained at any entry level position are so transferable!
