What do I enjoy about my job?

Dynamic, fast-paced, friendly, being a contribution to society through creating spaces for debate, discussion and change.

Above all: the thrill of seeing my far-fetched dreamy ideas come to life!

Challenging aspects

Working in a small and ambitious team means work hours can be long.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

After studying human geography at Sheffield I became fascinated by processes of inclusion and exclusion in communities, specifically - what made people feel like they belonged? I wanted to play a role in supporting people at the margins of society creating relationships to their community in a meaningful way. I tried a number of things when leaving university - I assumed I would end up at a charity but after a year of working at a youth engagement organisation I found myself always returning to wanting to do creative projects with the different communities I worked with. I found value in being someone that could provide spaces for self-expression and conversation. As a result, I decided to do a masters in Arts and Cultural Management and pursue a job in a community arts organisation which is where I am now.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

First and foremost - people skills. Being able to effectively communicate with a wide range of people in a warm and relatable way is key.

Event management
Writing copy for marketing

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

July 2014 - September 2014: Enjoyed my last summer of being a student!

October 2014 - March 2015: Founded and produced an Arts Council funded poetry organisation called Verse. The project delivered imaginative and boundary-pushing poetry and story-telling workshops to young parents in Tottenham, North London to create spaces for self-expression and foster community cohesion.

April 2015 - April 2016: Project Manager at a youth engagement organisation called Participation People. I led borough-wide schemes for local authorities including Greenwich, Southwark and Newham council. For each scheme I supported young people in the community to be leaders and create their own creative social action projects. I specialised in working with children in care and care leavers.

April 2016 - September 2016: Travelled through S.America working with creative youth charities and working at a live music venue in Brazil.

September 2016 - Current: MA in Arts and Cultural Management at Kings College London (full-time course to be completed in September 2017)

June 2017 - Current: Programme Manager at Poet in the City.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Continuing producing and curating game-changing cross-arts events that provoke debate and challenge ideas with new audiences.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Volunteer! I worked as a volunteer at Poet in the City for 5 months before going for the role of Programme Manager. This allowed me to get a good insight of who the organisation is and what they are about and vice versa. The performing arts industry can be quite fast-paced so connecting yourself to as many communities as possible through being a volunteer allows you to keep up to date with what is going on in the sector and who's who.
