Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I devise and implement marketing campaigns for a range of commercial fiction titles - from number one bestselling authors to brilliant debuts that you can't put down.
I could be managing our consumer-facing social media communities, pushing price promotions on backlist books, coming up with pre-order competitions for retailers, designing proof covers or London Underground and National Rail adverts, writing newsletters or helping with author events.
I love the designing element the most - taking pictures, designing covers and adverts for the tube. It's amazing when you see them up!
The wide range of genres I work on - in one day I could be targeting women's fiction readers, true crime readers and paranormal romance readers - all very different! Also the volume of books that we publish is very high and it can be difficult to juggle promoting so many.
I've always been interested in writing and books - I did an English Literature degree after all - and publishing seemed to offer quite a nice career path. After doing some work experience found that I enjoyed the Marketing side of things much more than editorial or publicity.
I use my proofreading skills to check copy, organisational skills to manage the amount of work that there is. You have to be able to work with all different types of people, especially in marketing as we work with sales, editorial, production, publicity, ops and of course the author and their agent.
