About the job

Main responsibilities

I work in the Sport & Leisure team and am responsible for developing and seeing through creative ideas and campaigns which promote the work of my clients and leads to positive media coverage.

This means generating engaging content and communicating effectively with national, regional and sector-based journalists on a day-to-day basis; creating strong relationships with the media; and monitoring and reacting to coverage of my clients and the wider news agenda.

Typical day

My typical day will involve the writing of press releases; speaking with journalists either directly over the phone or via email; monitoring coverage and the news agenda; generating engaging content, feature ideas and campaigns; putting together reports, blogs and industry insights; and planning and managing events.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Creating engaging content and ideas which I then see through into positive coverage for the clients I work with, as well as the planning, attending and managing of high-profile events.

Challenging aspects

Like journalism, PR is a fast-paced industry which involves working to tight deadlines. Ensuring that any content or campaigns we plan are relevant and timely in a world where news becomes old so quickly is a challenge!

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have always wanted to work in the media and find that PR is a fast-moving, creative and stimulating industry that offers exciting opportunities.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

People working in PR come from a range of different backgrounds and have different qualifications.

I myself graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BA in English Literature.

Training I receive as part of my job

I receive regular training to ensure I am constantly growing my skill set and developing in my role at PHA. Members of the team also regularly deliver seminars and hubs so that we are continually adding to our knowledge base and understanding of the industry.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Since leaving University I worked briefly for a financial services company before taking a year away to travel. Upon returning I completed an internship at a London PR agency before joining PHA Media, initially on an internship and then on a permanent basis.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I want to keep progressing at PHA. The agency has a great reputation for developing talent and helping employees take the next step within the company.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Being proactive is crucial - you shouldn't wait for a job to be available before you get in touch with an agency about any job opportunities.

Many agencies also take people on on an intern-basis to start with, which is a great way to impress while gaining invaluable experience.
