Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Working in a multi-agency team to protect children on child in need plans and child protection plans.

Typical day

Multi-agency meetings to discuss children/young people.
Home visits.
Creating packages of support.
Responding to crisis.
Writing reports and maintaining records.
Direct work with children.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Working closely with families and other professionals.

Challenging aspects

Stress/emotional challenges.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Valuable and rewarding.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Qualification as a social worker.
General analytical skills from BA in philosophy.

Training I receive as part of my job

My MA was a requirement for the job. Mine was funded by the NHS but this funding is under threat for future students.
I am now doing a masters level module in professional practice as part of the 'assessed and supported year in practice' that all newly qualified social workers undertake.

Sept 2010 - July 2012 MA Social Worker

Sept 2012 - present, Social Worker, Cambridgeshire County Council.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Children and family social work.
Train as a practice educator.
Involved in social work research.
