Graduate case studies
I am currently on a 6-month private sector secondment at The Crown Estate, where I am working as a Customer and Sustainability Project Lead. My role involves creating a customer sustainability framework which maps the environmental, social value and governance (ESG) credentials of The Crown Estates current customer-base for strategic planning purposes.
A typical day involves a mix of desk-based research work: to identify customer commitments to ESG, and engagement with stakeholders across the business to ensure they are happy with the structure and presentation of the framework. I host regular working group meetings where stakeholders can feedback on my work and meet with stakeholders across the business to ensure alignment to existing frameworks and that the framework will be of value to different Strategic Business Units.
As I am still on the Civil Service Fast Stream, I have other commitments such as my corporate objective. My corporate objective this year is university outreach where I am expected to spend 10% of my time promoting the Civil Service Fast Stream to a specific university by hosting events which promote the Fast Stream.
The Civil Service Fast Stream offers a unique breath of experience working in different roles and different departments across government. This has enabled me to identify what I like and what I don't like from a job role to make better informed decisions regarding my future.
Generalist Civil Service Fast Streamer: October 2020- present day
Customer and Channel Higher Executive Strategy Office at UK Visas and Immigration (Home Office): October 2020- September 2021
(Private Sector Secondment) Customer and Sustainability Project Lead at The Crown Estate: October 2021- present day
Despite really enjoying my time on secondment in the Real Estate sector, I am keen to return back into government and gain some more exposure within Policy.
I am hoping to complete the Civil Service Fast Stream in 2023 and obtain a Grade 7 role in Policy or Strategy.
I would advise any students interested in a career in the Civil Service to research the 'Civil Service Success Profiles' online. This is a framework used to assess candidates for Civil Service roles. The specific elements which 'Success Profiles' cover are:
• Behaviours - the actions and activities that people do which result in effective performance in a job.
• Strengths - the things we do regularly, do well and that motivate us.
• Ability - the aptitude or potential to perform to the required standard.
• Experience - the knowledge or mastery of an activity or subject gained through involvement in or exposure to it.
• Technical - the demonstration of specific professional skills, knowledge or
qualifications
More information on this is available on the Civil Service website.
