Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I work in student support and information services in a University. I manage a team that supplies statistics to faculties, strategic analysis to the University executive and provide a support facility to all staff.
We also analyse externally produced statistics such as league tables and performance indicators.
Responding to adhoc requests for data or analysis. Producing statistical reports for distribution throughout the university.
Attend meetings to present statistics or provide analysis of data. We work to a calendar of statistical releases, both public and internal that dictates our day to day work.
The ability to manage my own time and work load. I find working in the public sector a relaxed yet challenging atmosphere; I also enjoy combining the ability to work with statistics whilst being in a 'people facing' role.
Time and resource pressures caused by working in a small public sector institution.
I wanted to work with data but not in an environment that meant I never worked with people. I had worked in research for my PhD but missed the interaction with others.
Whilst studying for my PhD I often had to present work at conferences which has given me confidence when in meetings or verbally presenting work now.
* Data Analyst
* Statistician
* Statistician (Team leader)
I would like to stay in the public sector, working with statistical data.
It is never too early to plan your career, holiday jobs in the right sector or placements are great on the CV and for contacts.
It is not bad to accept jobs at a lower salary level and work your way up. You can prove your ability once you get into the job.
