Alex -
Executive Officer

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I provide senior, executive administrative and project management support to the university’s Vice-Chancellor and his Chief of Staff. I am responsible for internal and external communications, including the creation and editing of speeches, press releases, presentations and other forms of media engagement. I am also involved in the creation of high-level reports, summarising strategic documents to inform planning and policy-making.

I oversee, arrange on international engagements and help initiate and deliver, university-wide projects that form part of the Vice-Chancellor’s portfolio.

I also service the university’s Executive Board and the Vice-Chancellor’s Planning Group meetings and have responsibility for our directorate's strategic planning round submissions and budget.

Typical day

On a normal day, I would engage closely with colleagues in the Vice-Chancellor's Office to ensure that the Vice-Chancellor is supported appropriately for the day's and future engagements. I will likely be reviewing, editing and creating media content and arranging agenda, papers and minutes for committees/boards for which I am responsible.

What do I enjoy about my job?

My job allows me to use some of the skills I've gained during my study, is very varied and challenging. No day is the same and it can be hugely exciting and motivating to work in a fast-paced office.

Challenging aspects

Time mostly, there is too little of it.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Universities are great places to work. Colleagues are very friendly and I enjoy working for something in which I believe.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Writing reports, editing and reviewing documents and materials, creating presentations, working with a diverse group of people, being self-sufficient and working towards competing deadlines.

Attendance at national/regional events/conferences

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

I would encourage students to be active and make the most of their time outside of the lecture theatre. Be that joining a society / sports club / committee, volunteering or taking a part time job at the university. The more students get involved, the broader the skill set they will acquire.
