Graduate case studies
On the graduate program, my responsibilities are to learn, develop my 'Gripple Spirit' and engage with charity projects.
As a graduate, I am rotating around the different departments to learn more about the business. I have been set a year long project that focuses on Artificial Intelligence and am excited to see what I can find out about this. I am also taking part in a charity project with the other 2 graduates where our challenge is to organise, plan and host a charity event that raises at least £8,000 for charity.
The work culture here is amazing. I truly get the impression that people want to be here for the right reasons, and everyone is so helpful and has made me feel extremely welcome. After university, I wanted to transfer into the technology sector and Gripple are giving me that opportunity.
As it's all very new to me, it feels like I've got a mountain to climb in order to get up to speed with all the departments processes and ways of doing things. As well as setting high expectations for myself, the company also have high expectations for me which will help push me to do the best job possible.
As a mathematics graduate, I love problem solving and have always had an interest in technology. At the University of Sheffield, I chose all the computer science related modules available to me in order to obtain knowledge about different programming languages and mathematical processes. This job enables me to transfer these skills whilst continuously learning and developing.
Problem solving, programming, teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship. These things were all instilled in me at the University of Sheffield and used almost every day at work.
After finishing University, I took some time to myself in order to apply for graduate jobs, and let off some steam after an intense 3 years of study. I got a job as a delivery driver at Waitrose off Ecclesall Road (can recommend for anyone looking for part time work at Uni). This enabled me to live and experience Sheffield through the eyes of a student, without needing to go to the IC and study for exams.
My career plan is to complete the graduate scheme at Gripple and take on both technical and management responsibility. I also look forward to them sending me to Costa Rica next year as part of the Raleigh International charity expedition.
Don't be put off by rejection. There are tens of thousands of graduates applying for the same jobs after university, and it's easy to become disheartened. Also, definitely apply to a company if you think that your values and ethics line up with theirs, as it's much more likely they can train you on technical things than change who you are. I didn't have much experience at all with computer science but still applied to Gripple's tech graduate scheme and got it! Finally, don't be afraid to take some time off and have a break after university. Personal development is equally as important as academic development.
