Main responsibilities

An Industry Liaison Officer & Student Development Executive with proactive liaison with employers for job referrals to students, extremely passionate in career development. With 15 years of extensive UK & HK work experience in all sizes of organizations from 15 to 10,000+ employees in Higher Education & Business sectors, experiencing diverse multinational & local company culture. Typical day

Actively joining different networking events & equipped with a wide range of networking, organisation skills & attentive to details.
With my long term passion in career advising, I have been a student career advisor at Manchester & Sheffield University (UK) Careers Service for 13 years. Previously spent 10 years working & studying in UK, truly believe that ‘Doing what you like is freedom, liking what you do is happiness’ (Frank Tyger) in our career path.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I gain a lot of job satisfaction when I can help job seekers and I can feel a sense of satisfaction once I finish polishing a CV to make it a piece of perfect document.
I also enjoy matching the job seekers and the hiring manager/HR together through job referral so the job seekers can get their job that they need and the hiring manager can hire a suitable candidate to help with their work. This reaches a win-win situation to help both sides.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I love sharing my own job hunting experience to students/job seekers in order to help them to go through their job hunting journey and hope they can get their dream job eventually.
I also like networking to meet people with different backgrounds to increase my exposures. You never know if they can help you in any ways in the future even 10 years later on and we can help each other too to create synergy through collaborations to achieve a win-win situation.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I have studied the Global Career Development Facilitator course and have been using the coaching skill that I have learnt when approaching different job seekers to walk the way with them during their job hunting journey and explore any different options with them according to their strength, ability, career interests/inspirations etc.
I also use my collaboration skill and build strong relationships with employers to liaise for potential job opportunities for job seekers.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I studied masters after completing my undergraduate degree.
I then found a job in market research in UK to gain overseas work experience as I am from Hong Kong. After working for almost 4 years, I moved back Hong Kong and carried on working in market research and in total I spent 10 years in market research.
During my time working in market research, I have been volunteering as a mentor/career advisor at my universities’ career service (University of Sheffield & Manchester) to share my job hunting and work experience with students.
Eventually I left market research and shifted to work in university career centre in which I have been enjoying helping students with their job hunting process.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I hope to progress along to help more job seekers/hiring managers and grow together with them.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

No matter what area of study or career you are considering, try identifying your current interest and focus in this area as you will have more motivation to learn and further develop in areas which you are interested in. Even if your interest/passion shifts in the future, your skills or experience you have gained already can also be your transferable skills to utilise in your next career. Hence, do not hesitate to go ahead to try different activities in order to identify your interest/strength especially when you are still young!
