Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
Providing monitoring support for clients including the delivery of weekly and daily reports. Drafting briefing materials on policy and relevant political developments.
One of the great things about the job is that no two days are the same. I work on six client accounts across different policy areas so my day is determined by what is being discussed in the news and in Parliament. On a typical day, I will spend time monitoring a parliamentary discussion, summarising a latest policy development and supporting new business work by researching potential clients.
Being connected to the political world and being involved in work connected with the news agenda. I also enjoy learning about different business sectors and understanding their policy requirements.
Understanding a variety of issues quickly and being able to relay this quickly to senior colleagues and clients.
Because it allows me to be involved and engaged with politics whilst also understanding the commercial world.
I regularly use the research and analytical skills I developed whilst at university.
I receive regular training on issues such as time management, task prioritisation and writing.
I spent a year working in the House of Commons as a Parliamentary Assistant to a Member of Parliament.
I undertook a number of internships in public affairs before securing a full time position.
I hope to progress my career at Portland who offer regular opportunities for promotion.
Be prepared to undertake internships as in politics and public affairs as they are one of the few ways to prove yourself worthy of a full time position. I completed three prior to gaining a full time position.
