Graduate case studies
My responsibilities are based around delivering applications management services whilst adhering to the contract/ service level agreement with the client. My job is similar to a project manager's role.
Every day looks different for me, I am in and out of meetings with different stakeholders discussing how we can improve the service, the risk and issues associated with the service and how to mitigate etc. I work with an offshore team in India and so am in contact with them daily to complete reports on how the service is going/any breaches to the contract. It's a really great role with multiple responsibilities. I get to work with a variety of people including security architects, software engineers and IT environments testers.
After studying Bioengineering, I wasn't sure where to go and decided on becoming a teacher. I chose to become a secondary science teacher and utilise the knowledge I acquired during my degree. I was a Science teacher for 1.5 years and particularly enjoyed the practical lessons.
During my teacher training, I had the opportunity to take part in a placement at a Special Needs school and loved it. I decided to switch to Special Needs after 1.5 years in mainstream teaching. I learnt very quickly that SEN schools were entirely different to mainstream schools but acclimatized nonetheless. I had a class of high functioning boys and I really enjoyed teaching them - to me, it felt much more rewarding than teaching in mainstream schools.
I learnt many skills whilst I was a teacher that were incredibly useful for when I made the transition into the technology sector. These skills were very transferrable and included: complex problem solving, critical thinking, being able to explain a variety of topics simply, decision making, management, monitoring and other soft skills.
I now work for Capgemini, a global technology consulting company.
I plan to develop my career in service delivery management, in the hopes of one day becoming an engagement director.
