Office Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

As an office manager my main responsibilities include project management (including leading on and creating publications); event organisation and coordination; establishing and facilitating the programme of support for early career researchers (inclusive of courses, workshops, events, one to one support and online resources); financial duties; line management; creating and distributing the centre's monthly newsletter and managing social media channels.

Typical day

My typical day includes a variety of tasks. There are generally 1 to 2 project tasks ongoing at any given time, combined with 2 to 5 events/courses/workshops per week. On top of this I complete daily administrative tasks including programme/support queries, liaising with venues/external trainers, invoicing etc.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I enjoy creating and working with designers on publications. I also enjoy event management.

Challenging aspects

The job can be demanding in terms of workload and you need to be able to adapt to changing priorities.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I enjoy working in the higher education sector. The job also gives me a good variety of responsibilities and if I would like a change I can move into other sectors with my skills (for example I could work for a charity on campaigns).

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

For this role you need to be highly organised and be able to take your own initiative.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

When I first left Sheffield University I needed a job to pay the bills. I went through a recruiter and got a job as an Accounts Administrator. Whilst this job was not for me it gave me the experience needed to get a role at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as a PGR Coordinator (I was in the Accounts role for 6 months). After a year as a PGR Coordinator I wanted to move to London and I got a job at Imperial College as a Training Administrator. After a year I was promoted to Office Manager which is my current position.

Where do I see myself in the future?

In the future I see myself in a strategic role either within the Higher Education or Charity sector. I am currently gaining exposure to more strategic meetings etc to ensure I can apply for these higher level roles.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Psychology was a brilliant undergraduate degree, I really enjoyed it. My advice to undergraduates in Psychology is to gain psychology work experience over your summer term if possible. This will help you get into the sector if this is what you would like to do. I also found a masters degree has really benefited me.

In terms of my career I think this is a job you can progress in and move to a variety of sectors, so if you are unsure of exactly what you would like to do it is a good option.
