CFD Engineer
About the job

Main responsibilities

I carry out computational fluid dynamics simulations for a range of applications in the built environment sector (wind, thermal, fire, water).
I also have a project management qualification (PMQ) and manage projects with contract values anywhere up to £100,000

Typical day

Line Management.
Business Development.
CAD model building.
CFD simulation setup.
CFD simulation running on bespoke compute cluster.
Communicating results to design teams within the company/externally to architects or other consultants.
Research and development work.
Report writing.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The variety of projects and challenges, and that I'm allowed to work fairly autonomously but also feel like an important and valued part of a small and supportive team of experts.

More recently I've also become more involved in line management, team strategy, hiring etc.

Challenging aspects

Communicating results in a way which makes sense to non-experts.
Gathering information from different parts of the business and external clients so that simulation work can be undertaken.
Managing teams of people with different skillsets and ways of working.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I enjoyed the CFD modules I took at university. In my current role I was given a lot of responsibility and autonomy from the start, I've experienced a varied workload and worked on lots of interesting/high profile projects around the world.

General engineering skills, problem solving, technical writing, fluid dynamics, computational mathematics, computer science, coding/scripting, effective communication, teamwork, project management.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Try to look for specialist jobs on forums (cfd-online) and email team managers/directors directly.
Ensure you know what the type of work will be and that you have a genuine interest in it.
Really focus on developing your specialist technical knowledge.
