Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
My roles vary from project to project:
due diligence, engineering research, problem solving, project management, site supervision.
I might be working on an operations monitoring project for a combined cycle power station, reviewing projected operational budgets for the next few years. Or advising a client on the best steam condensing plant to install in their proposed power station. Or even comparing various gas turbine configurations to produce the most efficient power.
On site I have witnessed testing of fire water deluge systems and gas turbine commissioning activities.
Learning, learning and still learning! Every project is different and has a new light.
You don't always know everything - so sometimes it is a challenge working out where and who to find the information you need.
People will always need power so this area of work provides an opportunity for a stable career through my working life and in particular an interesting and varied one!
A sound problem solving ability and the ability to manage my time effectively.
Project dependent.
Achieved Chartership with the IMechE
Gaining a greater technical understanding of power stations and involving young engineers in my projects.
Work hard when you need to at University - it does pay off and a good result will help you to stand out from the rest when it comes to job applications and interviews. Try out extra curricular activities too to broaden your skill set.
