Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

On a typical day I will get into the office and first of all check our Google Ads account for anything out of the norm. Then I will proceed with the various task I might have. I am currently working on recreating our Google Ads and AdRoll accounts, which means creating new PPC campaigns, new creative banners, new ads and landing pages. This involves a series of skills such as SEO strategies, graphic design, marketing skills and more.
I work with a wonderful team of people. The company has more than a thousand employers, but it feels like everyone is always happy to help and support each other. Moreover I am learning more than I imagined I could learn in just a couple of months. I have acquired new skills, attended a lot of training courses and attended a lot of networking events on behalf of the company.
At the beginning I found it very hard to settle into a career that wasn't the one I studied for. I was very scared of not being good enough and not having the right skills to succeed. This is still something that frightens me a little when I am faced with marketing concepts I am not familiar with and that I am still trying to learn. However, the support I have received from the company is outstanding, I have been enrolled in a lot of training courses that helped improve and become more confident.
I wanted to try something different from journalism, while also being able to be creative and not only use skills I acquired during my studies, but learn other that will help me in the future no matter if I stick to marketing or if I go back to a journalism career.
I use skills I have gained during my studies on a daily basis. SEO strategies are a big part of online journalism, and they apply to marketing as well. Strangely enough, the skills I learned while creating a magazine for my course also proved to be very helpful in the job, as I am currently working on the online magazine of the company and trying to optimise it to increase traffic. Moreover I use Adobe Creative Suite programs on a daily basis.
This is my first job after graduation, but I am now certified in Google Ads Search, Display and Mobile from Google Academy. I am fully certified in HubSpot Inbound, Inbound Marketing, Content Marketing and HubSpot Software. I have also attended IDM Digital Marketing Essentials course and Jellyfish Google Ads Standard and Advanced.
I have also been nominated for the Magazine Academy Outstanding Consumer Journalist 2018.
In the future I see myself going back to a journalism career path, but I know this will be a lot easier thanks to the skills I have gained in my current experience in marketing.
A degree in journalism is not as strict as people think - there are so many transferable skills you can use in other careers. I believe it's a great qualification to have and although I am not currently a journalist, I still believe I have made the right decision studying journalism. I also think it's fine to try something different after graduation, it's always better to consider all the possibilities before committing to one thing for the rest of your life, and marketing is a great field to explore.
