Catherine -
Strategic Campaign Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Every UK household and business uses energy but it's a bit of a dry topic. My job is to come up with interesting ways to communicate to the public about energy: how to reduce usage and bills, where people can get help, and why it's important to the planet. It's my responsibility to work out the best way to do this.

Typical day

Working in civil service communications is extremely varied. Over the past year I have worked on a national advertising campaign, seen my work in The Sun, Sky and ITV, and handled budgets worth millions.

Right now I'm devising a plan for how the government will help people get ready for winter. I need to involve lots of different people and groups, gather and analyse information, and deliver a range of creative ideas.

What do I enjoy about my job?

There are lots of opportunities to try new things. During my career I've worked in press, marketing, digital, internal communications and strategy.

I've also met some really inspiring people along the way. The civil service is not about old men in bowler hats!

Challenging aspects

I'm always trying to balance what the public wants with what the department and Government wants - and they're not always the same thing! Sometimes projects are delayed or pulled, which can be frustrating.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I'm attracted to the big issues that government departments handle e.g. how to educate children, how to get people into work, how to solve climate change, how to keep the NHS going.

I feel I'm contributing to the solutions and making a difference to society.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I still use a lot of the skills that I developed during my degree e.g. clear and concise writing style, meeting deadlines and paying attention to detail. I even use my shorthand in meetings!

Training I receive as part of my job

Civil servants can take at least five training days per year and there is a specific training programme for communicators. I'm particularly interested in customer insight and evaluation, and have completed - as well as presented - courses on these topics. There's a strong mentoring programme so you can learn from those around you.

Career information

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'm happy where I am for the moment.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

The civil service is seen as a bit old-fashioned but I think it's a really interesting place to work, particularly if you like the big issues. Each department is slightly different so spend some time thinking about your interests. There's a fast-stream programme for graduates but you can join at any level.

Getting a first job is all about determination and preparation. Make sure you've got relevant experience, a killer CV and good interview technique. If you haven't got those things, go out and get them. During my last year at uni I volunteered for 100 hours in a communications department - this was what set me apart from the other candidates.

Other comments

I had a fantastic time at uni and hope you do too!
