Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Personal tutoring of undergraduate students, including leading sessions in academic skills, transition to university life, employability and commercial skills.

Supervising dissertations as well as supporting and leading taught modules, including design, development, planning and review of innovative modules and programmes. This also includes collating and responding to student feedback, contributing to student enhancement at all levels and upholding quality assurance processes throughout the whole student lifecycle.

Typical day

My day varies depending on the time of year - during term-time I'm usually teaching a seminar or supporting a lecture, holding 1:1's with my personal tutees or dissertation students, or marking assignments. During vacation my role is more flexible and time is spent reviewing teaching and planning classes for the following semester.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I love the variety of my job - some days are spent meeting new people, and others are spent researching or marking in the sanctuary of my office.

Challenging aspects

I suppose the most challenging aspect of the job is the change in workload between term-time and vacation. Term-time is chaotic and you end up working far more hours than perhaps you'd like. But the flip side of this is that you can work more flexibly during the vacation, particularly over the summer when there are conferences to attend.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I've worked in higher education since graduating from my undergraduate programme in 2008. I always knew education was something that I was keen on supporting and - after a short placement teaching secondary school pupils - I decided that higher education was the place for me. I'm able to utilise my communication skills to good effect, whilst having the flexibility and variety to hone and develop other skills, such as problem solving and research.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I use my Sheffield degrees fairly regularly now, as I am supporting a business ethics module and have just taken on the role of module leader for a summer school module in this area.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Look for a broad range of opportunities and say yes to those that present themselves to you. Although I always thought I'd like to work in education, I sort of 'fell' into working in higher education. Had I not taken the opportunities that presented themselves to me during my undergraduate degree, I may well have ended up down a very different path!
