Sheena -
Freelance Journalist

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I write news articles for publications across the country, provide copy-writing services to independent businesses, support charities with communications and teach on an NCTJ journalism course.

Typical day

On a typical day I might spend a couple of hours teaching and helping students get their stories published before booking interviews for my own articles and writing up copy.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The variety – no two days are the same.

Challenging aspects

Journalism is a competitive field to get into and remains so throughout your career.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I have always loved writing and am interested in people and their stories.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I use my NCTJ qualification which I gained alongside my university degree. In particular, I use my shorthand on a daily basis, both for interviews and to teach the next generation of journalists.
