Head of Labour Market Strategic Analysis and Briefing

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I head a team of 5 multi-discplinary analytical team leaders and around 14 analysts in total analysing the labour market to inform Government policy development and delivery, and communication about the UK by the Government.

Typical day

Meeting with policy officials (DWP, Treasury, Number 10, DExEU); Miniters and analysts to discuss designing, delivering or the results of data analysis/evidence. I am also part of seevral leadership teams that shape the support and direction for 50 and 100 (approximately) respectively. I also engage with external stakeholders such as academics and the independent ONS.

What do I enjoy about my job?

When someone - Number 10, a Minister, a policy officials or other analyst - changes their mind based on the analysis I or my team have done.

Challenging aspects

Prioritising what is possible and top priority given staff available

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I wanted to apply economics and analysis to benefit the public - rather than to pursue profit.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Leadership, economics, broader social science

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I did a summer placement with the Government Economic Service between my BSc and MSc. I then have done over 100 hours a year CPD - split roughly between analysis and non-academic skills.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I would like to be a senior Civil Servant / lead analyst. I would like to complete my economics PhD at some stage.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Think about careers from year one. It is not enough to get a good degree mark and then wing it.
