Police Officer

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am currently posted to a Child Abuse Investigation Team. My responsibilities include safeguarding children and vulnerable people, investigating criminal allegations and taking cases to trial.

Typical day

Includes interviewing young witnesses and sometimes the alleged offenders. I liaise with social services extensively to ensure that information is shared. I write up crime reports accordingly and review evidence.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I enjoy when you have a spent extensive time putting a case together and seeing it through to court, hopefully securing a conviction and seeing justice for the complainants - this is the best part of my job.

Challenging aspects

There is sometimes a high stress load and obviously a lot of responsibility.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I originally wanted to go into law through the law conversion course. However, I experienced a burnout and decided I needed a break from studying. I applied to join the police with the primary aim of helping people.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I do not use my degree day to day in my role

Where do I see myself in the future?

I intend to study for my detective exam in the police. I would love to do a masters in the future but this might be difficult for me to juggle with work.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

I would still encourage anyone who wants to go down the law route to do so - I work alongside barristers and believe it would be an interesting career choice.
