Career information

Brief history since leaving University

After graduation I worked as a Control Systems Engineer (Field Service) in Kuwait for 3 years until I left that for my current job.

Where do I see myself in the future?

In the next couple of years I will be targeting a more senior position with more responsibilities and interesting projects. After that I want to break into becoming a Consultant and starting my own Engineering Consultant firm.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Before you join for a Master's degree make sure you have a few years of relevant experience in the industry first and really evaluate why you need this degree and what you hope to gain from it.

Having some prior work experience , in my opinion, will keep you grounded and help you approach your coursework and theory with an industrial application mindset.Developing good programming skills is great ( Function blocks , Sequential flow charts or syntax) and will help you in the field. These two will also improve your employment prospects after graduation. Although employment prospects are a worrying topic , if you do have the choice, do consider working first for smaller companies like local systems integrators/contractors where you could have the opportunity to work with systems from different vendors and thus add to your work experience with varied experience. It is very important to gain as much knowledge as possible early in your career and let it reflect on your CV for later better jobs.

The first few years after graduation won't be easy and there's a lot to learn but Control systems is a very exciting and dynamic field so the journey is definitely worth it.

All the best!
