Emma -
Engagement Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Running the in-house Community Team that creates content for and engages with the studio's fans and players. This covers everything from in game design to writing articles for websites. Our team runs social media channels, Forums, websites, YouTube channels and on console apps.

Typical day

I work with every department in the studio as they build the game, keeping the needs of the players and our fans in mind. I run the team that runs all our forward facing channels. This involves a lot of inter-disciplinary meetings, planning engaging online content and, sometimes, playing the game during work!

What do I enjoy about my job?

Working with the studio's fans. Every single day is different. Coming up with random and stupid ideas for social media content is part of the job!

Challenging aspects

Effectively communicating with hundreds of thousands of fans. The passion that people have for what we do can sometimes come through as upset and anger which can be tough to deal with.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I hadn't considered the video games industry as an option but the role I took after finishing my MA played to the skill set I built up on my course. After a small amount of time in games I realised I didn't want to work in another industry, it's literally about creating fun!

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Problem solving, writing, people management, creativity and proof reading.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

4 roles at Rare Ltd:
Web and Community Support;
Community Manager;
Social Media Manager;
Engagement Manager.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Very happy where I am. However a future move could be to direct engagement for more than just a single studio.

Advice to students
