Melanie -
Marketing Manager

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I look after the global marketing activity for Literature, Classical Studies, and Archaeology books at a leading academic publisher, and manage a small team of junior marketers.

Typical day

Every day is different! The marketing activities that I manage range from traditional tactics such as attending academic conferences, advertising in print/online publications, and assisting authors with events, to digital tactics such as PPC (paid search), social media, and email newsletters.

The marketing team is also involved with evaluating proposals for new books and making recommendations based on market knowledge, so there is close collaboration with our Editorial teams.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The authors I have worked with in my career are truly experts in their fields and I have worked on some fascinating books; from photography manuals to textbooks on privacy and law in the digital age, as well as exciting new online resources that have the potential to change how academics are able to access primary sources in the Humanities.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I knew when I left university that I still wanted to be involved with academia in some way. The academic publishing industry, particularly when working for a university press, is committed to disseminating knowledge and research.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I've not completed any additional qualifications since leaving university. I started at a different corporate academic publishing just before graduating and worked my way up there, looking after marketing for textbooks in assigned subject areas. I then moved to my current employer to work in their medical division at the beginning of 2017, and have since changed roles.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'd like to stay within the academic publishing industry, but who knows where the future will take me - there's so many different departments (Marketing, Editorial, Production, Sales, Digital just to name a few) so I hope to get experience in a different area within the industry as my career progresses.
