Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Provide cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) interventions for children aged 7-16 years

Typical day

Completing comprehensive mental health assessments.
Assessing and managing mental health risk.
Assessing safeguarding/vulnerability risks.
Developing collaborative treatment plans.
Providing 4 treatment sessions with a CBT approach.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Collaborative assessments and treatment plans.

Challenging aspects

Hearing the difficult things children and young people have had to live through.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Working and engaging difficult-to-engage young people makes every day different.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

MA Social Work.
Interpersonal skills.
Systemic assessment skills.
Adapting content for young people - Genograms, timelines.

2014 - level 7 module in Cognitive Behaviour Interventions - University of Chester.
2018 - PG Dip Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for children and young people - University of Manchester

Where do I see myself in the future?

I'd like to develop my knowledge of Islam-informed psychotherapy and support the Muslim community.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Social work opens up so many doors. It is a hard qualification to complete but well worth it. You can become a reflective practitioner which really helps clients as you constantly check yourself and develop.
