Matthew -
Head of Parliamentary Strategy

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Provide strategic advice to ministers and the department on engagement with parliament.

Typical day

I lead on urgent parliamentary business, so the day may start in responding to that. May then deliver a presentation on parliament to policy officials, before ending the day in providing advice to ministers on how their decisions may play out in parliament.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I've worked in the civil service for five years. Most of my jobs have been working closely with ministers, either in their private office or in parliamentary teams. I also lead on the Department for International Development's input into the Chilcot Inquiry.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I've always really enjoyed working with parliament, and hope future roles continue in that vein. Would be interesting in managing a bill as it passes through parliament, or perhaps even transitioning from working in government to a position in parliament.
