Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I manage a team of approx 30 people who lead on strategy, policy, legislation and advice to ministers on every aspect of judicial policy and the Government's relationship with the Judiciary.
Development of policy, strategy and legislation in response to areas of ministerial and judicial interest, pressure from the media, parliament or litigation.

The hours can be long and you can be on call at night and over the weekends if you work in private office and or a high profile area.
The civil service fast stream is a great graduate scheme in terms of variety of employment and access to development (training and a range of completely different jobs where you are very much thrown into the deep end).
My degree - any degree will do but you need to be able to collect and quickly interpret large amounts of information and data and be able to quickly form a view that you are comfortable presenting - orally or in writing.

4 years on graduate fast stream where I did a range of policy, private office and operational roles
4 years in middle management in 4 different roles (policy, change management and the Justice Secretary's private office)
2.5 years so far in the senior civil service in a policy/strategy role
Continuing my career in the civil service in a range of policy and operational roles across a number of government departments with stints in the private sector.
Show that you are something who is capable of "making things happen" and or "making a difference" by getting involved in an area of interest within the university or city. Can be anything from arranging an event to supporting individuals or groups in the local community.
