Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
Script management, clearances, travel and accommodation arrangements, hiring junior staff, contracts, research
Issuing new scripts to cast and crew, carrying out a clearance read of the script (eg products or music or clips we want to use) and beginning correspondence with the relevant people to obtain licences for those, booking flights and compiling itineraries for people, managing junior members of the team and researching our plans for different filming locations.
Every day is different and I get to meet a real range of people and visit a variety of places.
The days are very long so it difficult to find a work/life balance.
I love watching TV drama and wanted to get behind the scenes to start working on shows and making my own stuff.
Office IT skills eg Excel
Script management including break downs and amendments using Final Draft
Strong research skills and compiling that information in a clear manner
Strong people skills
Qualifications are mostly health and safety based eg First Aid training, Fire Warden training, H & S production training and carbon literacy training for making production more sustainable
Graduation in 2011 to 2012 - returned to my holiday job of working in a pharmacy
2012 intern at RDW Television
2013 production assistant at Bwark Productions and production runner at Big Talk
2014 team assistant Bwark Productions
2015 production secretary and post secretary at Red Planet Pictures ('Hooten and the Lady' for Sky)
2016 production secretary at Bronte TV & Film ('The Strik'e series for BBC1)
2017 assistant production coordinator at New Pictures (currently untitled Netflix project) CURRENT
Ultimately I am working towards producing. I am planning to do this by next working in scripts as a script editor then producing and perhaps exec producing in the British television industry.
Get as much work experience as possible and try to meet people to discuss how they got to where they are in the industry as this is a great way of networking. It is a very competitive industry so make sure to get as many extra skills as possible to make your self stand out eg first aid training, driving licence. Be passionate and willing to start at the bottom and work your way up.
