Lucy -
Urban Designer

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Project Management and Design of the public realm

Typical day

Project Management meetings, site visits, design from concept to detailed design, contract administration and brief writing.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Making a better place for people, not being profit driven.

Challenging aspects

Dealing with large numbers of stakeholders all with different agendas.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Unlike a lot of landscape architecture jobs in private practice, working for the government allows me to frequently get out of the office, do studies of the Public life of the city, helping to develop a stronger and more sustainable community.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

All the landscape architecture qualifications I gained at the University of Sheffield. Being in Perth, Western Australia where all landscape architects get trained at the same university, allows me to utilise a different way of being taught from Sheffield.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

2 Years at Burgess Design Group - Perth
1 Year in Construction at Birmingham Airport
2 Years at HASSELL (international multidisciplinary firm)
3 months City of Perth (current)
I also gained my landscape architecture registration in 2016

Where do I see myself in the future?

Initially I would like to improve my position at the City of Perth. However in the long term I would like to be self-employed, either in Landscape Architecture or in another career entirely, perhaps catering as my main passion is for healthy, tasty food.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Keep on top of what is current in the industry, also, study and understand construction/ how things are actually built, this is a massive time saver later down the track and employers really value it.
