Recruitment Consultant

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I manage the full recruitment life cycle; from the initial approach in the passive market to closing the offer. I currently work the London and New York markets, specialising in technology recruitment.

Typical day

A typical day mainly includes headhunting the passive market, working from referrals/networks, and liaising with candidates and clients to close deals and negotiate terms.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I enjoy working in a boutique business, and therefore having a strong voice in the direction of the business' development.

Challenging aspects

Like any sales-based job there are always disappointments which can occur outside of my control.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I enjoy consulting a business, learning their needs and adding value in the form of the people I place there. It involves persuasion, the ability to negotiate and form an argument - qualities I practised throughout my degree.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I use my English Literature skills to help me form arguments both written and verbal; and my History degree has helped to refine my research capabilities.

Training I receive as part of my job

I have ongoing training to help me in my job, all conducted by my managing director, and often daily. I also spend time independently learning outside of work to help fast-track my progress.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

After graduating in July 2014, I started my current role in August 2014.

Where do I see myself in the future?

My plan is to open the New York branch of the business, as I have already some experience within this market, and aim to continue to develop my knowledge of the area and progress through the business.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Given it's a sales job, you need to sell yourself in an interview - explaining what value you can add to the business, what areas you are interested in, and always research the business beforehand and plan some insightful questions to ask e.g. regarding the business' development strategies etc.
