Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Carer for people of all ages. Taking groups on visits, holidays etc. etc. (for approx. 30 years)

Typical day

Taking all types of groups at all ages on trips, visits , holidays etc. Giving talks on the quality of growing old esp. on food subjects. Visiting elderly people to help them in any way. Help with people with mental problems. Envelope "stuffing" for Carers Leeds.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Doing everything I enjoy .....

Challenging aspects

Making sure you put the people you are caring for FIRST.....Always driving with great care..

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Was advised that, if I didn't change my work, I would have a heart attack in two years! This was nearly 30 years ago.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Many! Mainly kindness, helpfulness, professional, enjoy driving. lots of patience!

Training I receive as part of my job

Hold advanced Ambulance driving test. Medical check-up every 3 years. firt aid training, How to deal with fire. Health and Safety

Senior Scientist for Rowntree (York)
Invented Jelly tots. Helped to produce freeze-dried meals for the Apollo Space programme

Part-time lecturer in Statistics at York Tech.

Deputy Head of Science at Grimsby Tech.

Chief Examiner in Food Science and Technology for City and Guilds.


Principal of Thomas Danby College, Leeds

Where do I see myself in the future?
