Biddable Account Executive

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I organise and monitor a number of campaigns for Google Products across the UK, Germany, France, Russia, Spain and Italy.

This includes working with different teams to create a brief and strategy for the client. Within the brief we establish which channels we want to advertise on in each country, who we want to target, and how we are going to delegate the available budget. Once the brief has been agreed, we create a detailed plan of exactly how these campaigns are going to work. This is split into 2 main sections - the more tradition types of advertising through direct buys, and biddable advertising, where you can buy media through an online auction. I am responsible for the biddable channels.

I monitor the different channels to make sure that we are spending money in the right places. Once the campaigns are complete, I perform detailed analysis of the results, outlining insights into any tests we ran, and using these learnings to make recommendations for future campaigns.

I am also involved in a number of thought leadership groups within the company, which help us to remain up to date with industry changes and developments.

Typical day

Each day varies depending on where we are in the cycle of campaigns.

Setting up campaigns involves a lot of research and decision making into the sorts of tests we want to run.

Whilst the campaigns are live, I monitor the current spend across all markets and channels. I work with the planning team to ensure any budget movements are put into place so we can optimise to the most profitable channels. I send weekly reports internally and externally so everyone is aware of the progress and changes I am making.

When they campaigns have finished, my days are spend pulling data and analysing it at it's most granular level to create presentations to give to the client.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Essence is really keep to try new things and set itself apart as a category defining company. This means that I get to test new platforms and different ways of doing things. I love the challenge it brings.

I also am fortunate to work with some great people who make the days extremely enjoyable. It also doesn't hurt that we have foosball and table tennis tables!

Challenging aspects

It can get very stressful with lots of things going on at the same time, but there are always people around to help if you need it.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

It varies every day, and challenges me to think outside the box. Digital media is an industry that's growing so it's exciting to be in the centre of it all.

I enjoy using my analytical skills to make stories from the data, to ensure that we are making the most of our budgets and testing new and interesting opportunities as and when they arrive.

Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Marketing Strategies Executive, Communigator.

Communigator is an email marketing company and I organised and managed email campaigns for a range of businesses

Events Co-Ordinator Intern, Food from the Sky

I volunteered here for a few months, where I helped to organise a range of events, and moniotored their social media channels.

Events and fundraising Marketing Internship, Cancer Research UK.

I spent 6 months volunteering for Cancer Research UK. I managed a number of projects, to produce and deliver plans to increase fundraising in the local region, specifically through corporate and dedicated income, whilst supporting our volunteers in their fundraising efforts and events.

Historical Research Masters, University of Sheffield.

Studied a range of different topics but focused on the American Civil Rights Movement.

Between graduating from my undergraduate degree in 2008 and my Masters in 2010, I worked a number of jobs and went traveling for 6 months to South Africa, South East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Ideally I will be working in the marketing department for a large charity. I'd love to move back to Sheffield so if I can find somewhere that will offer this sort of role in Yorkshire, even better!

I would like to gain some marketing qualifications, preferably part time whilst working my way up the career ladder.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Do some volunteering whilst your still at University, it looks absolutely brilliant on your CV and will give you an edge over all the other graduates that will be going for the same roles.

Grad schemes are good, but don't focus solely on them because the competition is extremely tough and the recruitment process is exhausting and often not rewarding! There are plenty of junior level positions which will give you the opportunity to work your way up through a company, and often at faster than you would do through a grad scheme.

Use the careers service! They were a great help to me, offering all sorts of advice.

Always get a few people to have a look at your CV - it's good to get different opinions, but always make sure it's personal and true to you.
