Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Teach students science between KS3 and GCSE.
Teach biology A Level.
Plan and deliver lessons.
Assess and record progress of all students.
Attend CPD sessions.
Review academic and general wellbeing of a form group.

Typical day

Teaching lessons.
Dealing with a form group.
Revision sessions.
Running a tennis extracurricular club.
Communication with staff.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Seeing students succeed and the organisational aspect.

Challenging aspects

Motivating struggling students and the hours spend working outside of school.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Variety in daily work life and the difference that can be made to students in my class.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Degree and preferably a PGCE.
Strong communication, time management and organisation skills.
Self-motivating.
Reflective.

Training I receive as part of my job

PGCE in Secondary Biology.
Currently doing my Masters in Education alongside teaching.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

To keep going and recognise that as every year passes, it gets easier.
To gain lots of experience within a school beforehand in order to know if this is the career for you.
Aim high - be picky about the school you want to work in - it will pay off.
