Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Organizing, processing, and cataloging Macy's archives dating back to mid 19th century, including photographs, media, objects, and ephemera. Providing reference services to research requests and working with researchers. Installing short term exhibitions in Macy's Herald Square.

Assisting in Macy' Branded Entertainment events such as Macy's 4th of July Fireworks. Planning for and heading up the Teen Program for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Typical day

Cataloging historical documents and objects in Macy's archives. Meeting with colleagues to help plan for Macy's events.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I love learning about the history of a store that is so beloved in the United States. Part of my childhood is going to Macy's every Christmas to see the decorated windows and watching the Thanksgiving Day parade every year on television. Now I get to help plan this event every year.

Challenging aspects

No one has every attempted to do a full catalog of the archive.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I love the history behind the archives.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Cataloging, handling historic documents/objects, my research skills, my historical knowledge.

Training I receive as part of my job

Not much. This was a newly created position and any training I had is based on the knowledge I have from working in historical museums and my Library Science MS.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

I have worked as an administrative assistant in the South Street Seaport Museum as well as interned there in their collections department.

I have interned at the Museum of American Finance, a historical museum, where I cataloged a donated collection and created a cataloging/object handling handbook for incoming interns.

I interned in one of New York University's archives cataloging the papers of a former professor.

I worked on a project for Madison Square Garden cataloging a portion of their archives.

I volunteered at both the Brooklyn and New York Public Libraries.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I see myself continuing in the field of archival work.
