Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Export, consulting with clients, providing quotations and processing orders, communicating in foreign languages with international customers, market research and analysis, translation of official documents.

Typical day

I communicate with international clients, send quotes and process orders, verify that the company's products meet the customers' specifications and requirements, translate documents and carry out market research.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Communicating with customers in their own languages.

Challenging aspects

Learning an entirely different subject to that which I studied - business and metallurgy - and learning the necessary technical vocabulary in foreign languages.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

The opportunity to work in an international context and use my foreign languages on a daily basis.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Foreign languages, communication, research, analytical, problem solving skills.

Training I receive as part of my job

On the job training - no structured training. Reliant on personal self-teaching and asking for instruction or explanation when required.

Where do I see myself in the future?

I hope to re-enter the charity/non-profit sector eventually, after gaining more voluntary experience in my field of interest. I am doing this in my free time - my current job is a simple 9-5 job so it allows me time to gain additional experience in other areas.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

You need to be willing to work voluntarily as an intern in many fields in order to gain experience, before being offered a job. It takes time and patience!
