Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I head the asset management and systems division responsible for the strategic management of all road and transport infrastructure.
Generally each day is ad-hoc consisting of planned meetings, staff management, relationship building, along with the usual unplanned management activities.
The fact that each day is different and there are constant challenges within a changing environment.
The key challenges are population growth, increasing network complexity and the volume of data available. How to migrate data to information and knowledge. The speed of technology change is becoming increasingly significant.
It really stemmed from technical training and identifying opportunities that interested me. The opportunity to strategically manage a significant range of assets is of immense appeal.
Although technically qualified at Sheffield I took further formal management training and continue to seek appropriate and focused opportunities for further training to enhance competences.
Technical specialist knowledge becomes less important the more management your position involves- however it gives you excellent analytical skills which can be applied widely.
Built a career mainly based around local government in infrastructure engineering, project management and municipal service provision.
I have worked for West Yorkshire Metropolitan County Council, Leeds City Council, Portsmouth City Council, Highways Agency, GHD Ltd and more recently Auckland Transport.
Continuing to live in New Zealand and continuing to progress a management career.
Proactively look for opportunities - they won't come looking for you! Don't be afraid of challenging yourself.
