Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Structural calculations and drafting of structural plans, mainly for residential properties.

What do I enjoy about my job?

I enjoy the fact that I know what to expect and am rarely surprised. I really enjoy having set hours. Tea and coffee provided by the company are a major bonus!

Challenging aspects

Some jobs can be tricky, such as trying to hold up half a house with no visible beams!

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I wanted a job with set hours and that I could leave at the office so that I could dedicate my time at home to my children.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

I use the calculations I learnt to do on my degree course, and would not have got the job without my degree.

Training I receive as part of my job

I have not received any specific training as yet, but will. I would also feel happy to ask if I felt there was extra training I needed. I have received in-house training in AutoCAD and engineering software.

Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Don't be shy about simply writing to companies to ask for work-it is how I have got all my engineering jobs. Don't worry about doing only a BEng, as long as you can explain why you have done so, it doesn't seem to cause any problems in terms of gaining employment.
