Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

I manage the University's media activities and aim to raise the positive profile of the University and strengthen its reputation by achieving positive coverage in local, regional, national, international, specialist and professional news media (print broadcast and internet), as well as social media.

There isn't really a typical day in the Media Team! Work can range from organising a press call for a VIP visit to the University, to pitching stories about researchers at the University coming a step closer to curing deafness. The team is responsible for sending out press releases, handling media enquiries from journalists, organising media to attend University events, monitoring the media and managing crisis communication.

The variation - no day is the same!

Having to manage so many things at once, from the pitching of stories to the handling of difficult media questions from awkward journalists.

After working as a senior journalist for a couple of years at a local paper, I thought it would be interesting to see things from the other side of the fence, and so I decided to embark on a career in PR. Working as a journalist really equipped me for the role which appealed to me due to the fact it involved writing about a host of topics, from fascinating research breakthroughs to amazing achievements by the students.

My BA in English Literature and Language equipped me in terms of being creative, and having sound writing skills and the MA in Print Journalism was invaluable in shaping my writing skills to those required by a journalist. The MA also helped me hone my ability to source a strong news story.
