Graduate case studies
Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.
I am a Project Manager. I lead on a number of cross University projects. In particular I manage the development of the University relationship with a partner University in China.
Report writing
Verbal presentations on findings
Research and data analysis
Attending meetings
Keeping action logs of project progress
Analysing business models and methods of service delivery
I enjoy working across lots of different departments working together towards one goal. Project work usually involves working with lots of different people to make something 'new' happen.
I am interested in working in the public/third sector.
Although it is necessary to have a degree to apply for this job, I do not directly apply the knowledge learned in my degree in this role. Instead the experiences I gained at University outside of my degree in the world of work and through the University's volunteering scheme have provided me with the skills for work.
I attend in house management training and am also studying for a Management Certificate through the Institute for Leadership Management; this study is sponsored by the council.
On leaving University I was elected as one of the 8 Sabbatical Officers at the Students' Union where I became a Trustee of the Students' Union for one year.
I gained a place on the NGDP (National Graduate Development Programme for Local Government). I worked in Local Government for 4 years.
I completed Prince 2 Project Management qualification which helped me to gain my current position.
At the moment I am looking to continue to progress as a Project Manager and increase the variety of topics on which I work.
Work experience is absolutely key.
If paid work is not forthcoming then volunteering is just as attractive to a potential employer. Sheffield Students' Union run a Volunteering department who can advise on opportunities. I personally volunteered as a classroom assistant in the Schools Programme.
