Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

I am the design manager for the concept design of a major urban road upgrade and project manager for a detailed design joint venture delivering a design and construct highway upgrade. Both project are multi million dollar contracts and my roles include civil engineering design, project management, monitoring delivery and costs.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The variety of my role. I enjoy being able to have technical understanding and solve problems as well as managing the project finances and contracts.

Challenging aspects

Management and delivering high quality work on time and in budget. Managing a Joint Venture team from two companies and getting everyone to work together.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

No two days are the same. I get to be proactive in managing my team and helping my clients solve problems. I enjoy the design coordination and getting others to work together and be the best they can.

Brief history since leaving University

MEng Civil and Structural Engineering

ARUP Leeds office for 4 1/2 years

Transferred to ARUP Australia in October 2007 and have been working in Brisbane and the Sydney since then, made an associate in 2012.

Where do I see myself in the future?

Staying with Arup, leading major highway projects.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Try really hard to get relevant vacation work experience, be flexible about what work you do and learn at every opportunity.
