You need intelligence, patience, determination, some charm and energy.
You have a two year training period, but you need to learn what you really need yourself and by taking things on board as you grow and develop.

As a partner.
Don't do it because you think that it is glamourous and/or highly paid. It is becoming increasingly difficult to make partner and unless you do so, you will never earn a particularly great salary.
Only go for it if you really want to do it/have a passion for it. Get as many and as varied placements as possible with law firms, the Court system, CAB etc.
Don't be pressured to go into law. It's not the kind of job you can/should just turn up to work to do. You need to put a lot into the job.
