About the job

Main responsibilities

Provide up-to-date, accurate and balanced information on company products to internal and external customers through generating core claims, standard responses, training and copy approval.

Ensuring Pharmacovigilance (drug safety) activities for Marketed Products are conducted in compliance with all applicable local and international regulatory requirements.

Typical day

Take calls and respond to emails from healthcare professionals wanting further scientific information from our products.

Write reports in regards to side effects that patients experience whilst on our products- both marketed and those in trials.

Help generate core messages for marketing by turning scientific evidence into factually accurate promotional claims.

Review promotional material for accuracy and compliance.

What do I enjoy about my job?

Interactions with many different people, level of responsibility, positive enviroment.

Challenging aspects

Changing regulations, managing a diverse portfolio of products, maintaining knowledge of changing NHS.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I studied Biomedical Science; however I did not see myself in a lab enviroment or academic setting. I liked the idea of working for a pharmaceutical company but I did not wish to sell in the field.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Use my degree and research skills aquired every day.

Training I receive as part of my job

Attend symposiums, courses relating to my role. General skills like presentation skills, chairing meetings etc


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Following graduation I worked for a company in Sheffield. I was responsible for data migration, quality assurance of information. Liasing with DWP to ensure standards were met. Lead a team of 5 ensuring all were correctly handling information. Set up workflows and procedures 9/10 months.

Returned to London and started with a specialist Japanese pharmaceutical company. Worked with a team of medics and pharmacists (office and field based) supporting the Regulatory and Marketing activities of the products.

I was also responsible for Quality Assurance including writing Standard Operation Procedures and Compliance. I worked here for approx 2 years

Moved to Teva UK Limited. Large generics medicines company. Line manager for 3 others providing medical information to healthcare professionals. Also reviewing promotional material for compliance.

Current positition. I have attained a Diploma in the NHS in England endorsed by The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI).

Where do I see myself in the future?

Remaining in pharmaceuticals, perhaps moving away from medical affairs (promotional aspects) and more towards clinical research and development (trials).


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Many companies, especially the smaller ones, will consider taking on interns. Be proactive; speak with specialist pharma recruiters- they have amazing links and even if you are inexperienced they can help put you in touch with someone who might be interested.
