Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Responsible for managing consultancy projects to government, utilities and industry regulators on economic and financial issues. This involves modelling analysis, report writing, presentations and idea/argument development. I also have a role in winning business and internal running of the business.

Typical day

A typical day will be a mix of analysis, writing, meetings and presentations associated with client consulting projects.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The smart people I work with and the chance to apply economic and finance theory in practice.

Challenging aspects

Having to understand issues quickly whilst also being authoritative with the client and any other stakeholders in a project

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

Analytical and challenging with varied issues as economic consultancy involves working on projects.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

Financial modelling, economic theory, finance theory, presentation and communication skills.

Training I receive as part of my job

Industry (e.g. utilities) issues training, finance, accounting, financial modelling, presentation and competition economics.

Brief history since leaving University

I have a MSc in economics from a London University

Where do I see myself in the future?

I expect to remain in economic/financial consultancy with a focus on utilities / infrastructure sectors


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Enthusiasm for economics/finance issues but also develop core communication / presentation / writing skills as these are equally important to consultancy work
