Head of Year 9 and Teacher of Biology

Even though many of our graduates will have progressed in their careers since completing a case study, they are still of interest to students who wish to gain an understanding of the world of work.

About the job

Main responsibilities

Teaching biology and responsible for the tracking and progress (academic) as well as pastoral care of Year 9 students.

Typical day

Teaching, contacting home, setting up intervention for students not meeting targets, reintegration/reconciliation meetings, checking on student welfare.

What do I enjoy about my job?

The students.

Challenging aspects

The parents.

Why did this area of work appeal to me?

I love working with people and the variety in the job.

Skills/qualifications I use in my job?

All my Biological skills from APS, the variety of teaching techniques picked up on and investigated during my PGCE and MA at Sheffield.

Training I receive as part of my job

Pastoral as and when needed. Inset days every year.


Career information

Brief history since leaving University

Since graduating first in 2009 then went on to PGCE -2010

2010-2012 completing MA in Education part time and working as an NQT and RQT in Sheffield secondary school

2012- present working in Bristol as Head of Year 9

Where do I see myself in the future?

Potentially looking into a PhD in Education, not sure yet.


Advice to students

My piece of advice to students

Check you have researched it first and have spent time in a variety of schools, you need a lot of stamina and patience.
